What does the word fresh conjure up for you?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, fresh means:

“new or different; new or interesting, therefore different and exciting.”

It is an energising word – light, spacious, full of promise.

As we step into a new year, there’s always noise about resolutions, gym memberships, weight-loss plans and new habits that, for most people, barely last beyond January. They often begin from a place of guilt: the tasks we didn’t complete last year, the goals that linger on a list, the sense that we “should have” been better, faster, more disciplined. But when we drag unfinished business into a new year, we also drag the stale thinking attached to it.

If those goals were truly alive for us, we’d have acted on them.

So why not take a fresh approach?

Think about all the things we naturally associate with the word fresh:
 fresh air, fresh coffee, fresh laundry, fresh food.
 They awaken something in us immediately – clarity, energy, possibility.
 Nobody asks for stale coffee or stale air.

So, what if we treated our personal and professional goals the same way?
 What if we threw the stale ones in the bin?

What if you gave yourself a genuinely fresh start?

Fresh thinking invites us to reimagine what the year could be, if there were no barriers. In coaching we often talk about “designing your desired future”, visualising where you want to be so clearly that your brain begins, almost automatically, to move you toward it.

But the moment many people set a goal, they instantly scan for the obstacles.

  • Why it’s difficult
  • Why now isn’t the right time.
  • Why success might even be uncomfortable.

Sometimes we sabotage ourselves long before we take a single step. Familiar ruts can feel safer than new horizons.

And then there’s the trap of “experience”.
 We speak to people who proudly say they have years in their role, but when we look deeper, what they really have is one year of experience repeated many times.

No new learning. No challenge. No stretch. Nothing fresh.

The first step: Start with a blank page

Imagine a completely clean sheet of paper titled Your 2026 Vision.

If you could write or sketch anything on it, what would you include?

  • The flight to far-off places
  • The job title you’d love to see on your desk
  • The new skill or talent you’ve always wanted to explore
  • The salary or income that reflects your real value
  • The impact you want to have in your team or organisation
  • The way you want to feel when you start each week

This becomes your Vision Board.
 A daily reminder of your desired destination.
 2025 is done. You can’t edit it.
 But 2026 is completely unwritten. It is fresh, open, yours to shape.

Fresh year. Fresh agency. Fresh action.

Once you know the destination, the question becomes simple:
 What is the first step?

Not “what should I give up?”
 But what will I take action on?

Joel Barker captured it beautifully:

“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”

So, our challenge to you is this:
